1st speed session...

Wednesday was the first time we went to the Glenpark Harrier's speed session. A good bunch of runners showed up. It was quite exciting to "race" other runners during those fast intervals. 2x800, 2x1200 and 2x 1Mile at the end were on the menue. Of course I tried to stick with the faster runners and gave my best to leave a good impression. I gave 100% to those intervals and was delighted that I indeed could keep up with the faster bunch.

The flip side of the coin is that I gave probably too much because now 3 days later I still have not recovered and suffer from a range of pulled and half torn muscles and as a result I had to abandom the plan to run the Kilmacolm 10k today...
I just need to be very careful with those fast sessions and need to remember that I am not 30 anymore!

Maybe I recover again for next weeks Eddie's Half-Marathon.

a wee marathon history

I am not running much at the mo. My legs NEED a rest. It's not that I am reasonable. I just cannot run straight currently.
So I have time to contemplate over my own running history. I have done only one 10k race in all those years. I also was running the GSR almost every year. But that was about it.

First Marathon in 1996 so I am running marathons for 12 years now.

For a friend of the metric system that last race was a real dream come true. Running a marathon faster than 4:00 minutes per kilometer. For a German or continental runner this is a known barrier. "Vierer Schnitt" in German (speaking with my mouth full). Meaning 4 minute splits. Done!

What next? Maybe I have peaked now. Maybe I am too old to get faster now. Although there are quite a few old gits around running much faster. Maybe I can do even better. In good conditions... like no wind... dry roads and cool temperature. Who knows...

Cologne Marathon

Quite a mixed bag that Cologne Marathon adventure. One week earlier we followed live on television Haile Gebrselassie running a new World Record in Berlin in splendid conditions.

Anxiously we checked the weather forecast every day. What would the weather be on race day for us in Cologne? Unfortunately both the weather and the forcast was getting worse and worse. More rain and more wind. Silke who had entered the Inline Competition was getting more and more depressed since wet roads are poison for a good time. And even dangerous. Also a few of Silkes Skate pals had entered the Cologne Inliner competition and came all the way from Glasgow...
Although Silke did not achive her 1:50 target for the 42k she and her group had quite a remarkable race finishing in 2:04 which is a very good result given the circumstances and more importantly they all finished in good spirit and had quite a good laugh.

I did not like the wet tarmac either. It did not affect me as much as the skaters but my brand new Nike Zoom Elite 4 slipped a lot. The wind was another problem but it was not desastrous. However I noticed after 10k that I had to drop my plan to go for a 39/39/39/39. That was a smart move I believe. When I reached the half marathon distance in just about 1:24 I thought no way you cannot keep that going. In particular since the way back was mainly into the wind. That second half however went absolutly superb!
It was still hard work to keep that pace going for another 10k and then another 10. But in particular into the gusty wind I was overtaking runner after runner which was very motivating. Everyone was slowing down (apart from one single runner who overtook me in the last mile) . No doubt that all the long distance training from 2008 kicked in giving me that fantastic endurance.

I ended up in 65th place from 7500 finishers.

10 km - 00:39:40
Half - 01:23:57
30 km - 01:59:30
2nd Half - 01:24:18

Total 2:48:15 PB! WooHoo!!!
(if you are interested Marco "Sonic" Consani's PB is 2:48:19 (London 2008)according to athletics data). So I am 4 seconds faster than him. Well, only if you are interested.
;-)

When I reached our hotel room utterly hypothermic I received txt messages from John K and Ian B congratulating me for my good result (at that time I did not even know my official result myself). Thanks folks!

The leading pack.

Somewhere a good distance behind...
